11/6 :: Ladylike and well-bred, Mary Cassatt was born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia, where she trained as an artist until the mid-1860s. At 21 she
broke with convention and moved to Europe on her own. In 1873 a visit to
Seville gave her the inspiration to launch as an artist: Spanish scenes considered
exotic by an American audience.
Cassatt avoided painting landscapes and, later in her
career, preferred quieter depictions of society and family. Her first show with the Impressionists was in
1877 and her work helped spark American interest in Impressionism.
"There's only one thing in life for a woman; it's to be a mother. A woman artist must be capable of making primary sacrifices."
Why might have Cassatt thought this? Is this true today? Why or why not?.......................................................................................................................
